Just wanted to pass along that our first meeting last night went VERY well. Attendance was 27 people, with some beginners as well as several seasoned observers.
This group now has 9 paid members. Others who are interested may join ASEM by printing out the membership form on http://st-charles-astro.org and mailing it in with their check. This membership will serve several functions, however a key emphasis of our membership will be on OBSERVING (public and private).
The group voted to convene regularly with meetings on the 2nd Saturday of each month. For now, the meetings will be held at the Weldon Springs center. Directions are posted on http://st-charles-astro.org. Therefore, our next meeting will be on March 12. Whenever the skies permit, the agenda will encourage observing activities after each meeting (so bring your scopes if you want).
Dates were also given for PUBLIC observing sessions at Quail Ridge (and soon at Broemmelsiek): May 14, June 18, July 16, Aug. 13, Sept 10, and Oct 8. No dates are planned between November and April. These sessions are geared to serve the public’s interest in the stars and we hope that they will continue to be heralded in the county media and made aware to everyone in St. Charles county.
No dates or plans are yet set for private, DARK sky observing. We encourage all new ASEM members to consider how they can help our group in some way. We will soon need to establish a board, and we’ll need to determine as a group which functions need chairpersons. Any volunteers now for chairing efforts you feel called-for would be appreciated.
We also encourage partnering efforts with our SLAS brotherhood. We expect that to continue public and private observing and other astronomy-related efforts together in accordance with each of our missions to benefit all stakeholders.
Clear Skies,
Jim Twellman
